fhnw.leadSuccessfully integrating workers with a disability into the primary labour market is both a challenge and an opportunity facing public institutions and companies today. This report investigates the status quo and gives recommendations for improvement of professional integration processes.
fhnw.initialPositionThe purpose of this project was to investigate the obstacles and difficulties of transferring a disabled person into the first labour market and to give recommendations regarding the improvement of professional integration measures of the main actors involved, namely the workshops, the companies and the Canton of the City of Basel.
fhnw.procedureThe study is based on desk research of relevant literature concerning disability studies and integration theory. Empirical findings are based on qualitative research interviews with four workshops, three successfully integrated workers, and three companies hiring people with a disability.
fhnw.resultsThe results show that participation in working life is an essential element for disabled people to integrate into the community, but that many hindrances still impede their full inclusion into society. These obstacles include the mindset of society, which perceives this group of people as being different and less productive; limited cooperation between the institutions directly dealing with the integration of disabled persons into the free labour market; and the fears of the people concerned, who are afraid of receiving unequal treatment within companies. The recommendations given in this paper point out that if the position of the disabled in the labour market is to be improved, several areas, such as informing firms about support instruments, communication and cooperation among and between workshops and state authorities, and the individual approach for integration measurements, need to be optimised.
